05 OCTOBER 2002 - GODALMING & GUILDFORD V AFC WIMBLEDON

This was a game completely spoilt by an incompetant referee who showed an obvious bias towards the home team.  He ruined this game with his constant whistle blowing for the slightest thing.  The G&G committee and supporters were most welcoming and made a great effort to accommodate us but the referee and later the players with their antics ruined the day for me and many other supporters.

Things seemed to be going fine when Kevin Cooper scored on 3 minutes, after that every decision seemed to go G&G's way even when the decision should have been in our favour.   G&G did a good job of preventing AFCW from playing good football and their offside trap worked a treat.  I don't think Danny Roberts had worked that out as he tried to get the ball to Kevin Cooper up front who would instantly get flagged for offside.  Sadly Joe Sheerin was injured in the first half and after some treatment had to be helped off the pitch.  Apparently he will be out for 3-6 weeks.  With 40 minutes gone the very tall G&G No9 (one of their more decent players IMO) levelled the score to 1-1.

The second half started well enough with the referee continuing playing his way.  Dons second goal came on about the hour from Danny Oakins and Cooper scored again later.  At some point things started to get nasty with off the ball incidents behind the referees back.  The G&G captain was seen to be having a real go at Danny Oakins who did well not to slot the guy.  At some point I saw a G&G player holding his hands to his right eye but what actually happened, if anything, and who did it is a mystery to me.  The referee decided to not only be whistle happy but card happy.  He sent off Neil Robson for being stamped on and booked two G&G players at the same time.  Then he sent off Manager Terry Eames and Fitness Coach Paul Braham.  Chants of 'Cheat, Cheat' aimed at the ref were ringing around the ground.  Then the G&G Captain was sent off for an off the ball incident in front of the dugouts which after his antics earlier was more than justified.

This referee was an utter disgrace and the real bad news is that he has been appointed to officiate our game at Walton Casuals next Saturday.  I have emailed the League Referees Secretary complaining about him and requested that the appointment be changed, I know other supporters have done the same.  If anyone else wishes to do the same thing please send an email to stuartref@sacollins.freeserve.co.uk

02 October - AFC Wimbledon v Bedfont

For the Dons 6th home game of the season the visitors to Fortress Kingsmeadow were the 'mighty' Bedfont who were lying 14th in the league table compared to Dons 6th place this morning.  A Dons victory would take us to 4th place once again.

Once again Simon Bassey managed to get himself in trouble.  Within minutes of being booked he managed to get into a fight with Griffiths (Bedfont), after a long talk with the ref both players were sent off on about 20 minutes.  For the next few minutes things seemed to get a little heated but fortunately calmed down with no further action required from the referee.

The first goal came on about 35 minutes from a Joe Sheerin header for his third in two games.  Bedfont managed to equalise almost on half time.

The second half began with the best start possible with a Lee Sidwell goal, in fact it was so quick after the whistle Chairman Kris Stewart hadn't even got back to his seat yet.  Unfortunately one of the Bedfont players had to be carried off the field of play on a stretcher to sympathetic applause from the AFC Wimbledon crowd, the player was replaced by No15 Darren Baker.  Following that Bedfont seemed to prove that they lack strength in depth and Dons were allowed to dominate things abit more.  Dons were almost gifted an own goal by Bedfont at one point.  Andy Sullivan subbed Shaun Marshall.  Joe Sheerin had a second goal disallowed for (according to the linesman) offside.  Ally Russell subbed Kevin Cooper.  And just to top things off Joe Sheerin scored his 4th goal in two games.  Joe Sheerin subbed by Glen Mulcaire and then Ally Russell immediately scored the 4th of the night for Dons and within minutes Danny Oakins scored the fifth.

Lee Sidwell was awarded Man of the Match by match sponsors Bradford & Bingley.
